Good evening everyone!
Phew, finally I have a moment to sit, breathe and regroup after all my drama on this crazy day. I want to take the opportunity to regroup as well as put down some thoughts I had on a show I saw last night at Joe’s Pub.
It all started weeks ago when Carly told me “Natasha, I want you to go see my friend Veronica with me in a couple of weeks at Joe’s Pub with me. She is AMAZE-BALLS. You will LOVE her”. Well, my calendar looked free for the night so I said, “sure let’s do it”.
Since we both work downtown, Maria Moncada and I met up and traveled together. Prior to the show, we had looked at the show listing on the calendar for Joe’s Pub to get a sense of what we have coming. We saw that the Tammy Hall Trio is backing her up and Joey Arias is going to be the guest star of the evening, followed by videos on youtube. We were intrigued and ready for the show.
The show did not disappoint. It started on a high note as Veronica dramatically strode out in none other than an amazing sequined mermaid green evening gown with a gorgeous french twist. Her sultry, glamorous, ultra feminine style combined with her impeccably smooth and expressive voice captivated everyone in the audience.
As a cabaret artist myself, one of the “no-no’s” we learned from early on is that as much as most of us may love ballads, it is always a bad idea to have a show with too many ballads lest we put people to sleep. Well…. Veronica is an exception to THAT rule. Her delivery and dramatic presence changes EVERYTHING! I love the way that she integrated the life story of Peggy Lee to her own story and made it come alive. She is singing Peggy Lee, but she IS Veronica Klaus, every step of the way. There was no mistaking that. Her Billie Holiday duet “God Bless the Child” with Joey Arias was beautifully executed. In addition, the Trio’s flawless accompaniment was her perfect compliment.
The two songs that stood out and touched me the most were 1) “Is That All There Is” 2) “Don’t Smoke in Bed”. I was “wowed” by how Veronica seamlessly told her own life story as a part of “Is That All There Is”. THAT was absolutely outstanding! The second song “Don’t Smoke In Bed” literally brought tears to my eyes and made me cry. Veronica’s delivery of that song was so heart-felt that I couldn’t help but relate the song to my personal experiences with relationships. The audience was completely silent during the song.
What an amazing performance all together! Job well done! If you ever have the chance to see her show, don’t miss it. Veronica Klaus is quite the phenomenal performer!
That’s it for today… until tomorrow! Sweet dreams to all my readers!
